Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh currently delivers courses to over 32,000 students from all over the world, while employing 8300 staff (Full Time Equivalent). It is the 3rd most popular University by volume of applicants, offering 500 undergraduate programmes.
The University is structured into 3 colleges (Humanities and Social Science, Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and Science and Engineering) containing a total of 22 Schools over 6 sites, including historic and modern buildings spread across the City. It has offices in China, India and Brazil and all teaching is done over two semesters rather than 3 terms.
In 2013 Edinburgh was rated 49th best University in the World by Times Higher Education with a ranking of 7th in the UK. It is a member of both the Russell Group, and the League of European Research Universities, a consortium of 21 research universities in Europe.
