Students’ unions are quite uniquely structured and have broad goals underpinning the simple mission to provide quality support to students. The complex governance and shared leadership between staff, officers and a Trustee Board sets them apart from the usual charity governance models. This is often the most difficult facet to students’ unions for those outside of the sector to understand and adjust to. If a career move into SUs is to be successful then the dynamics of governance and student leadership must be embraced – it is not just simply a case of working with it.
